What a website really costs in 2026: hosting, domain, email, and building it yourself with AI or hiring a designer, with honest ranges and worked examples.
1. The short answer
A simple website you build yourself can cost little more than a domain name, typically $10 to $40 a year, because many hosts host static sites free. A small business site with email on shared hosting typically costs about $40 to $150 a year all in. Having a designer build it adds a one-off cost that typically runs from several hundred to several thousand dollars. The rest of this guide breaks down each cost, with honest typical ranges and exact Cloudzyro prices.
Every website has the same few running costs: hosting, a domain and often email. Then there's the one-off cost of building it, which can be almost nothing or most of the budget.
2. 1. Hosting
Hosting is where your site runs. What it costs depends far more on the kind of site than on how many visitors it gets. Typical ranges across the market:
- Static sites and small apps on an app platform: often free. Paid plans are typically around $20 a month when you need more power, a team or more traffic.
- Shared cPanel hosting (WordPress, PHP, email): typically a few dollars to around $10 a month, often cheapest when paid yearly. Watch for introductory prices that renew much higher.
- VPS: typically from around $5 a month for a small unmanaged server, more if it's managed or needs a control panel license.
- Dedicated servers: typically from around $100 a month upward.
These are typical figures, not quotes. Prices change, and the cheapest plan often has limits that matter, so read what happens when you go over.
Cloudzyro hosting prices (US dollars, plus tax):
- Sites & Apps Launch: free. Business use allowed, 1 CPU, 512 MB of memory, 100 GB of traffic a month, and sites never sleep.
- Sites & Apps Boost: $20 a month per site, with 2 CPUs, 2 GB of memory and 1 TB of traffic. No per-seat charges, and never charged for traffic: over the allowance, a site is slowed, not billed.
- Web Hosting Lite: $6.99 a month, or $39.99 a year (about $3.33 a month). Up to 30 websites, 30 GB storage, 30 email accounts.
- Web Hosting Growth: $12.99 a month, or $59.88 a year ($4.99 a month). Up to 60 websites, 60 GB storage, 60 email accounts.
- Web Hosting Max: $24.99 a month, or $119.88 a year ($9.99 a month). Up to 250 websites, 120 GB storage, unlimited email accounts.

3. 2. A domain name
Your domain is a yearly cost. Typical prices for a .com run from about $10 to $40 a year depending on the registrar, and some endings cost far more. Many registrars discount the first year, so the renewal price is the number to compare.
Cloudzyro's domain prices are the same every year, plus tax: .com $36.99, .co.uk and .uk $21.99, .net $41.99, .org $42.99 and .io $145.99. Yearly Web Hosting plans include the first year of a new domain free (not .io). WHOIS privacy is an optional $7.99 a year.
You don't strictly need a domain to start: Sites & Apps gives every site a free your-name.cloudzyro.app address. For a business, your own domain is worth it.
4. 3. Email on your domain
Addresses like hello@yourbusiness.com cost either nothing extra or a monthly fee per mailbox:
- Included with cPanel hosting. Cloudzyro Web Hosting includes 30 email accounts on Lite, 60 on Growth and unlimited on Max, with webmail and settings for any mail app.
- A separate email service. Business email providers usually charge per mailbox per month, so the cost grows with your team. You'd need one with an app platform, which doesn't include email.
5. 4. Building the site
This is where costs vary most.
Build it yourself with AI. Tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and Lovable can write a complete site from a description. Some have free plans; Claude's paid Pro plan, for example, is $20 if billed monthly. Many people need a paid plan only for the month or two they're building. Your cost is mostly time: describing what you want, checking the result and fixing details. Once it's built, the AI tool can put it online for you; see deploying a site built with Claude.
Build it yourself with a website builder or WordPress. Website builders bundle hosting into a monthly subscription. WordPress is free software, but premium themes and plugins are often paid, sometimes yearly.
Hire a freelancer. Prices vary enormously by country, experience and scope. As a rough guide, a simple brochure site often costs from several hundred to a few thousand dollars, and sites with shops, bookings or custom features cost more.
Hire an agency. Agencies usually bring strategy, design, copywriting and project management, and usually charge more than a freelancer, often five figures for larger projects.
Whoever builds it, ask what you'll own at the end (the code, the domain, the hosting account) and what later changes will cost.
6. Worked examples
Real totals for common situations, using Cloudzyro prices, before tax:
A portfolio or landing page built with AI. Static site on Sites & Apps Launch: $0. A .com: $36.99 a year. One month of an AI subscription to build it: $20, if you need one. About $57 in the first year, then $36.99 a year.
A small business site on WordPress with email. Web Hosting Lite yearly: $39.99, including the first year of a new .com free and email on your domain. $39.99 in the first year. From the second year: $39.99 plus $36.99 for the domain, $76.98 a year, about $6.42 a month.
A web app with logins and a small team. Sites & Apps Boost: $20 a month, $240 a year, with the whole team included. A .com: $36.99. A database from a provider such as Supabase or Neon: free tiers exist, and paid plans add to this. About $277 a year, plus your database.
A freelancer hosting ten client sites. Web Hosting Growth yearly: $59.88 for up to 60 websites, with clients usually paying for their own domains. $59.88 a year for hosting across all ten.
7. Hidden costs to watch for
- Renewal prices much higher than the first term, for hosting and domains.
- Per-seat charges, where every teammate adds a monthly fee. Cloudzyro has none.
- Traffic or usage overages, where a busy month or an attack runs up a bill. On Cloudzyro, a Sites & Apps site over its allowance is slowed, never charged, and traffic Cloudflare blocks as attacks isn't counted.
- Free plans that ban business use, so a business has to pay from day one. See how this plays out in Vercel's pricing.
- Paid plugins, themes and add-ons that renew yearly.
- Paying monthly when yearly is much cheaper. Web Hosting Lite costs $83.88 a year paid monthly against $39.99 paid yearly.
8. How to keep costs down
- Match the hosting to the site: a static site shouldn't be on paid hosting, and a WordPress site doesn't need a VPS you have to maintain. See shared hosting vs VPS.
- Start on a free plan that allows business use, and upgrade only the site that needs it.
- Pay yearly for hosting you know you'll keep.
- Use the email included with your hosting if a few mailboxes are enough.
- Keep the build simple. Every plugin and integration is something to pay for or maintain.
