Why people look for a Fly.io alternative

Fly.io stopped selling its Hobby, Launch and Scale plans in October 2024, and new organizations have no free tier, only a short trial. Everything is billed by use, so the bill moves with each Machine, volume and GB of traffic. Apps made with fly launch also stop when idle by default, and a cold start takes about 2 seconds or more.

What to compare

Whether there's a free plan you can use for business, whether apps stay awake, whether the price is flat or usage-based, whether you need several regions, and whether your app needs a permanent disk or can keep its data in a database.

Render

Free web services spin down after 15 minutes without traffic. Paid instances start at $7 a month, Pro workspaces are $25 a month flat, and Postgres starts at $6 a month.

Railway

Also usage-based, but with a plan that includes usage: Hobby $5 or Pro $20 a month. Then about $20 a month per vCPU, $10 per GB of memory and $0.05 per GB of traffic.

Heroku

No free plan on its pricing page. Eco dynos are $5 a month and sleep after 30 minutes; Basic dynos are $7 a month and stay awake.

Cloudzyro

A flat price per site. Launch is free with business use allowed, 1 CPU, 512 MB and 100 GB of traffic, and it never sleeps. Boost is $20 a month per site with 2 CPUs, 2 GB of memory and 1 TB of traffic, and the team included. Traffic is never charged. Cloudzyro runs in London behind Cloudflare, not in many regions, and has no permanent disk.

Moving from Fly.io

A Node.js app with a build and a start script runs as it is, listening on the PORT environment variable we give it (on Fly.io, the port is set in fly.toml). Data on a Fly volume moves to a database such as Supabase or Neon. Connect your Git repository, add your secrets as environment variables, then point your domain at us.
